Open Source software - some with features, like Ardour, which would be remarkable at any price.

  • Ardour - audio editing application for Linux and Mac OSX by 64studio
    • Uses JACK, Ardour's audio connection engine - replaces a bay of jacks and patch cords found in traditional analog hardware environments
    • Routes audio in near real-time
    • Works inside Ardour and between apps (e.g. Audacity)
    • Native, host-based processing - no special hardware required
    • Can be installed with specific Debian distro or on top of an existing Linux or OS X installation (requires real time kernel and JACK)

  • Audacity - audio editing application. Simple to use and install, powerful but perfectly suited for simple projects
  • Blender - 3D content creation suite
  • Campcaster - radio play-out system
  • Campsite - CMS & Newsroom system
  • Chillout - the open source DRM platform
  • Cinelerra - HD and SD non-linear editor + storage. Video edting for Linux. Requires compilation and installation.
  • Distribution platform for DAB/DMB/DRM
  • Flumotion - streaming media server (Fluendo company specialized in delivering products and consulting services for Unix and Linux multimedia)
  • GStreamer Dirac video codec created by BBC Research and Development
  • Ingex - BBC automated tapeless production software
  • MMBase - AV-aware content management system
  • PrestoSpace - video-indexing, search & retrieval. Standardized Practices for Audiovisual Contents in Europe
    • PrestoSpace A Web site for archive owners and the public alike, which provides first point-of-call for information on audiovisual storage
  • Ruby on Rails - information aggregation platform. Full-stack framework for developing database-backed web applications according to the Model-View-Control pattern
